Android Passes iPhone In U.S. Web Traffic

What do you know? Apple is not having that great of a time competing against Android. Android is growing fast and by many experts’ estimations, it will pass iPhone completely in the next couple of years. We do not have to wait a couple of years to see what Android is capable of. It has already beat iPhone in U.S. web traffic. According to AdMob, 46% of the US mobile ad traffic flowing through the AdMob network during March 2010 belonged to Android. iPhone had only 39% of the traffic in the U.S. (though it still dominated with 46% of worldwide traffic).

How accurate are these numbers? It’s tough to say, but Admob does serve ads for more than 18,000 mobile Web sites and applications around the world. But the sample seems to be large enough to make some conclusions from these numbers. For starters, it’s interesting to know that Verizon Droid is responsible for a good portion of Android’s web traffic. That means Google needs to pay more attention to working with its partners to push Android. The issue of OS fragmentation still exists and something that Google needs to address more effectively in the future.
Let’s not forget that Apple is alienating some of its customers and developers with its controlling ways. In that regards, Android has all the help it needs to grow even further in the U.S. and around the world. The iPhone will still be around and will continue to compete hard with Android. But considering all the cool tablets and smart-phones that are based on Android, it’s tough to see Apple dominating this market for too long. In a sense, Android is on its way to become the PC of the smartphone market. But it actually works (unlike Microsoft’s PCs).
