Android Catching Up To iOS

Apple may be having a great year with all the products that it has released in 2010, but Google has a lot to be happy about too with Android. The platform has grown quite dramatically in the past few months and now owns about 25% of the market (according to the latest Quantcast data). Apple is still considered the top dog with its 56% market-share. Let’s keep in mind that this report is based on the number of people who have accessed web using their mobile phones. Still, Android has been able to grab a decent chunk of marketshare from Apple.

Android Is Not Free… In Microsoft’s Wo...

Microsoft may have been one of the most innovative companies in the past, but these days it is just bitter. It’s not enough that its top executives bash Apple’s shiny gadgets left and right. The company is now going after Android by claiming that it is not a free software. Why would anyone want to pay for Android when they can get Windows Phone 7? Microsoft pulled the same tricks when Linux was threatening to take a lot of business away from Microsoft Windows. Are there potential costs associated with Android? Absolutely. Unfortunately, Microsoft’s platform is not perfect. While manufacturers only pay Microsoft $15 per each device loaded with Windows, Microsoft’s flawed platform ends up costing more over the long run.

Here are just a few reasons Microsoft believes Android not to be free and generally a bad platform to go with:

  • Android OEMs (which are not stock Android build) have customization costs
  • Lawsuits are costly
  • Android’s fragmentation problem is a big issue
  • Microsoft’s platform is more OEM friendly
