Droid Shattering Expectations

Motorola Droid A855 Phone (Verizon Wireless)

It’s one thing to advertise the Droid as being better and more useful than an iPhone. But Android phones have not fared too well against the iPhone in the past. In fact, Android’s marketshare has not been large enough for its phones to make a significant difference. But the Droid is changing all that. Motorola has sold over 250,000 Droid units in its first week. That’s certainly more than what we have seen with myTouch 3G and other top Android phones.

The Droid is a capable cell phone, but it’s certainly not the end of the line for Motorola. The company has proved that it’s capable of building devices that are capable of challenging the mighty iPhone effectively. Android platform needs a lot of work if Google wants it to become a more serious challenger to the iPhone platform. But I wouldn’t put it past Google to catch up fast.

What we need right now is an explosion of apps to go on Android phones. The Droid is certainly a good start, and you can expect more sophisticated phones to be released in the near future. But the whole ecosystem has ways to go before it becomes the #1 smartphone platform. The good news is Android will eventually get there. It’s just a matter of time.
