Google Maps Navigation Comes to Android 1.6

Since Google announced Google Maps Navigation for Android, a lot of people have been complaining about the app not being available for earlier versions of Android. That is about to change as Google has announced that it is bringing Maps Navigation to Android 1.6 phones. That means more Android phone owners are going to get their hands on this cool, free navigation app. One has to assume that GPS makers such as Garmin and TomTom are not going to appreciate such a move as it puts even more pressure on them to come up with an answer to Google Maps Navigation. TomTom and other top GPS makers are currently focusing on iPhone, but Google Maps Navigation for free, so it’s tough to compete with such a product. Here is Google’s announcement on this development:
Today we’re expanding availability of Google Maps Navigation to devices running Android 1.6 (Donut) and higher, such as the T-Mobile myTouch 3G and the G1… This release also includes the new Layers feature, which lets you overlay geographical information on the map… If you have a phone running Android 1.6, you can download an updated version of Google Maps from Android Market to use Navigation today.
Not all the features from Android 2.0 version are available, but most of the useful features are. It’s certainly a piece of good news for those who want to get on the road for the holidays and want to use their phone as their GPS. Wonder if it means we have to give thanks for Google’s generosity.
